Nathaniel Popper is the author of Digital Gold: Bitcoin and the Inside Story of the Misfits and Millionaires Trying to Reinvinvent Money.
The book was an Amazon non-fiction Editor's Pick and a New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice. It was a shortlisted for the Financial Times Business Book of the Year award. Nathaniel has written about Wall Street and Silicon Valley for The New York Times for the last decade, closely following how technology has changed money and finance. Nathaniel is currently writing a book for Dey Street Books, an imprint of HarperCollins, about the rise of WallStreetBets, Robinhood and the retail investors who have shaken up the old world of money. He is also a co-producer of an upcoming film on the same topic, The Meme Economy, with Optimist Films. Nathaniel appears frequently on television and radio to discuss technology, finance and cryptocurrencies. Nathaniel grew up in Pittsburgh and lives in Oakland, California with his wife and two children. |

Since then Nathaniel has written about all facets of the new world created by Bitcoin, including the energy intensive world of cryptocurrency mining from China to Iceland; the rise of alternative cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum and Ripple; the perils of lost Bitcoin passwords; the specter of ransomware and dark net drug markets; and the digital currency ambitions of China, Venezuela and Facebook.
During the GameStop trading craze in January 2021, Nathaniel led reporting on everything from the congressional hearings, to the story of the young father who led the online trading hordes, Roaring Kitty, to Robinhood's efforts to face down its critics.
